FAQ
  • When is Hacks of Kindness?
    Saturday, October 3 from 9am - 9pm
  • Where is it?
Hacks of Kindness is virtual, so join in from wherever!
  • I don't know how to code. Are beginners really welcome?
Yes! We say beginner friendly and we mean it! If you have little to no coding experience, here are workshops that can teach you new skills or you can form a team with other hackers. There will be mentors available throughout the event, and there is a prize for best beginner hack. For people who don't want to compete at all, it is still an opportunity to network. WiCS aims to make this hackathon a stress free, community oriented experience for all.
  • Who can come?
All college students, including first-time hackers, are welcome.
  • When does registration close?
Registration is open until October 3rd at 9am.
  • Have you hosted hackathons before?
Yes! Previously we hosted Hack Night for Humanity, Take Back the Night, and Hack to the Future.
  • How is Hacks of Kindness different from other hackathons?
Hacks of Kindness is a hackathon geared towards (but not exclusive to) women and promotes closing the gender gap in the technology field. At WiCS, we care deeply about providing a sense of community through a relatively small hackathon. If you are interested in other hackathons at UVA, check out HooHacks!
  • How do I stay updated during the event?
You can join our Discordchannel for all updates, including possible schedule changes and important announcements. It’s the easiest way to communicate with the hackathon directors, as well as find and form teams, get help with your projects, and ask questions.
  • What resources are there for beginner hackers?
Check out our Beginner Hack Resources doc and our Resources for Hackers doc!
  • What are the prizes and judging criteria?
Check out our devpost for more info on prizes and judging criteria!
  • How do I submit my project?
All work needs to be submitted here, on our DevPost page. Specific information on how to submit work using DevPost can be found here. We recommend getting acquainted with DevPost before the submission deadline.
  • What is WiCS?
We are UVA’s Women in Computing Science (WiCS) organization, dedicated to growing, supporting, and encouraging women in computing sciences. Through mentorship and service, we aim to inspire women to explore educational and professional opportunities. WiCS is gender-inclusive, and hosts programs including: high school mentorship, professor dinner series, and industry events. Want to know more about WiCS?
